SCARF Brings Diversity and Inclusion into the Workplace for Harmony Week

Harmony Week is an opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity through inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

In its 21st year, this year’s Harmony Week theme is “everyone belongs”.

For over 15 years, SCARF Refugee Support has embodied welcome, community and inclusivity supporting refugee entrants, individuals and families within the Illawarra. With over 2100 community members, SCARF has worked to establish a community where refugee entrants feel welcomed and are able to overcome barriers.

SCARF’s diversity and inclusion team deliver tailored training workshops for schools, local businesses and other interested groups to help build understanding of the refugee experience and equip participants with a broad range of cultural capacity skills.

The program provides an opportunity for community members to put a human face to the refugee experience and gain insight into the myriad of skills and experiences people from refugee backgrounds bring with them. The workshops seek to promote inclusion and equity of access, recognising that when everyone has the opportunity to contribute to their communities the entire region prospers.

Sophie-May Kerr, SCARF Diversity and Inclusion Officer

Designed by people from both refugee and non-refugee backgrounds, SCARF’s workshops provide insight into refugee journeys and settlement experiences, as well as equipping individuals with skills to act against racism and discrimination.

Our school has had the great benefit of learning about human rights and how to build safe, supportive and inclusive communities from SCARF. We highly recommend SCARF to others wishing to engage in practical and compassionate ways so that those who have had a refugee experience can feel welcome and make their home among us.
